Acclaimed director Jack Garfein, who survived the Auschwitz concentration camp before beginning a long career in Hollywood and on Broadway, will give a lecture at UNT Monday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Golden Eagle Suite.
Garfein, 81, will discuss his experience during the Holocaust and reflect on how his work as a director and acting teacher has been influenced by his Jewish identity.
The lecture, presented by the Jewish Studies Program, will include a question-and-answer session and a book signing.
Garfein is one of several speakers brought to UNT by the Jewish Studies Program every year, said Richard Golden, a history professor and director of the program.
“An important part of our program is to increase the educational experience of UNT students,” Golden said. “This is a great opportunity for UNT students, the UNT community and the DFW community to hear Mr. Garfein speak.”
In addition to his visit to UNT, Garfein will speak in Dallas as a part of LearningFest, a weeklong series of courses on different aspects of Jewish culture sponsored by the Center for Jewish Education of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas.
Garfein, who currently lives in France, was invited to lecture at LearningFest by Meyer Denn, the executive director for the Center for Jewish Education who once worked with Garfein in 1989 on a project that took them to Garfein’s hometown in Czechoslovakia.
As a young boy, Garfein and his family were imprisoned in Auschwitz, Denn said.
Garfein, then 15 years old, was the only one of his family to survive.
At the end of World War II, Garfein traveled to the United States where he took acting classes in New York City and made his debut as a Broadway director.
He went on to direct polarizing films such as “The Strange One” and “Something Wild,” and to work with legendary actors such as James Dean and Marilyn Monroe.
“I think Jack Garfein has a very important message for people today, not only Jewish people, but people from all walks of life,” Denn said. “And that is that he has seen the world go through different stages.”
Garfein has spent the latter part of his life teaching acting classes and in 2010 released a memoir and acting manual, “Life and Acting,” which discusses his life as a Jewish actor and director.
Charlotte Decoster is a doctoral student writing her dissertation on the children of the Holocaust.
“I think it is important to talk to Holocaust survivors since so few of them are left,” Decoster said. “It’s important that students hear their stories.”
Garfein’s lecture is co-sponsored by UNT’s Department of Dance and Theatre, the Center for Jewish Education of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, the Jewish Federation of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation and North Texas Hillel.

Hi all,
this is a short story about a friend I’ve met in Valparaiso. I’m writing this just as it flows from the heart after a delighting lunch and subsequent afternoon in a nearby ice cream shop with Pato.

Born here in Valpo, he left his home country at the age of 24 to pursue a career as theatre actor in Europe, starting with Switzerland. He’s then lived in many places in the continent, mainly in France. In 1978 he moved to Réunion, a former British and French colony in the Indian Ocean, which has been his residence for the past 30 years, There, he works at his theater and gives acting courses. However, he hasn’t stopped yet. He only spends few months a year on the island; the rest of his time is spent in Chile, Brazil or Europe, visiting friends or making new ones.
He’s one of those person that I uttermost admire for their spirit, still so young and in love with life despite the age, just like my friend Nannie in Amsterdam. What I always say is that I would like to get to their age and still have even only half of their incredible enthusiasm and force! Pato is full of jokes, loves the good life and is and incredible party personn: just as an example, his New Years’ Eve was spent partying in the street till 7 am, then going to a friend’s place and dancing salsa till 3 in the afternoon, at which point he felt like he needed a nap. He went home and slept till 6 pm, when he got up again and joined another party till late at night! He has lots of younger friends – his take on most people of his age being that they are so boring: “Always showing me pictures of their grandchildren or themselves standing still next to some monument!”
Today is the last day of the Arts Festival in Valparaiso. A very important French theatre company, Generik Vapeur, is here for a play, and Pato knows them very well. While descending from Cerro Alegre, we stubmled upon a few of them acting in the street. Many of the kids took a break and came over to say hallo and hug him.

Pato and I speak a mixture of Spanish and French, the official language of the island where he lives. He’s full of stories and life wisdom. I asked many a questions about Pinochet’s dictatorship, which he didn’t live from here but which he knew from the inside: I learned from Pato that Pinochet was born in Valparaiso (!!!), and that from here came most of his ministers: one of them, Carlos Cáceres, was Pato’s classmate in high school.

I had to write this post straight as I got home because of the emotional impact such meetings have on myself. (Yes, this piece has been on the shelf for a long time!) I deeply respect older folks; when I meet one that still has such an cheerful attitude towards life, I am totally captured. Maybe because I fear that my enthusiasm won’t last that long? Or maybe I seek paternal advice? I’m not sure. How often do you happen to meet such inspiring people?

If you want to pursue an acting career, you can take acting classes in college while also earning your college degree. You can take classes with colleagues instead of searching for an outside class that may not offer your desired setting. Broward College has an array of acting classes to choose from that college students would benefit from in a number of ways.
In addition to entering the acting world within your school, taking acting classes at Broward would help you save money. You will take a certain amount of courses in any given semester, so you may as well take an acting course at school instead of shelling out additional money for an outside class. You would also save yourself from paying for transportation.
Acting classes are recommended even if you do not consider yourself an actor or want to work in theatre or film after college. Students take acting classes so that they learn how to be more comfortable with public speaking or self-expression. Beginner acting classes draws the attention of people with varying goals. For example, someone in school for education who wishes to become a teacher would greatly improve his or her skills in the classroom if he or she took an acting class.
If you are more interested in working with other experienced actors rather than beginners, Broward’s acting course catalog includes classes developing the voice, movement, film acting, children’s productions, and even stage combat. In a class for the voice, you would learn breathing exercises, annunciation, accents, and opening your diaphragm to help properly convey emotion in your acting.
These classes would also allow you to get involved in extracurricular activities that involve acting such as student films and student theatre. You would have the experience needed to audition for parts as well as access to others in the community. Other students at Broward may start recognizing you from your performances.
Acting class is very unlike history or economics class. You are assigned unusual homework, and class itself is very social and interacting. This could be a pleasant alternative to your other studies, especially if you are simply filling requirements for your degree or major.
Although acting is an emotional pursuit, this could be a stress-relieving class for you. Whether demonstrating positive or negative emotion, and whether it is yours or your character’s, it is always alleviating. It could counter the intense buildup of other classes. College gets extremely overwhelming at times, and everyone needs a way to get the strain out of his or her system in order to unwind.
If you do find acting incredibly enjoyable and truly view it as a fun class, try organizing your semester so that you are taking an acting class at the same time as a strenuous class. That way you will only do heavy reading or difficult tests and essays for a limited number of subjects. When it comes time to complete homework for acting class, practicing that scene will seem like a break from your other work. Whatever reason pushes you to take an acting class, know that it will be a great value to you and your education. This is also great if you are taking courses in South Florida and earning your degree in Broward, since Broward College has an excellent program.
